When we look at the Dutch fortress town of Naarden, we see more than just brilliant military engineering—we discover a living reflection of an osteocyte, a bone cell. This is no coincidence but a manifestation of humanity’s age-old yearning to replicate divine patterns. Our ancestors intuitively recreated in architecture the same structures that God inscribed in the very fabric of our bones.

  • 1. „The City as Cytoplasm”  Within these walls, life pulses like the cytoplasm of a cell. The town hall, houses, workshops, and squares each play the role of organelles, with every element serving a purpose in the greater whole. This organic spatial organization reveals how the human mind subconsciously mimics the natural systems created by God.  
  • 2. „Grote Kerk Church as the Nucleus” The church standing at the city’s heart is unmistakably its nucleus—the place where its spiritual and cultural identity is stored, much like DNA in a cell’s nucleus. Its strategic placement testifies to the designers’ profound understanding of sacred geometry.  
  • 3. „Bastions – Bone Canaliculi”  Naarden’s star-shaped bastions radiate outward just like an osteocyte’s canaliculi. These strategic points allow the city to „communicate” with its surroundings and adapt to changes, mirroring how bone cells receive mechanical signals from the body.  
  • 4. „Walls as the Cell Membrane”  Naarden’s double rings of walls function exactly like an osteocyte’s cell membrane—an intelligent barrier that protects the interior from threats while allowing controlled exchange with the outside world. This architectural reflection embodies the divine principle of „separation and connection.”  
  • 5. „The Moat as Lacunae”  The water encircling the town creates a liminal space that isolates and protects while reflecting its image—just like the lacunae surrounding an osteocyte in bone. This symbolic water is an architectural nod to the primordial waters of creation. 

Conclusion: The Divine Code Written in Stone and Bone. 
, Naarden is no random collection of walls and buildings but a conscious recreation of the divine blueprint we see in nature at the cellular level. It proves that humans, made in God’s image, instinctively strive to replicate the same perfect structures the Creator embedded in nature.  

, When we gaze upon Naarden’s star-shaped design and compare it to an osteocyte, we see not just a similarity in form but a deeper truth—that sacred geometry is a universal language spoken by both architecture and biology. Our cities built by our ancestors are not only places to live, but also a conscious reflection of the cell structure expressed in stone!

„Osteocytes: Guardians of Bones – From Formation to Functions „



1. Formation: From Osteoblasts to Osteocytes 
Osteocytes develop from osteoblasts – the cells responsible for bone formation. When an osteoblast becomes surrounded by mineralized bone matrix, it transforms into an osteocyte while maintaining connections with other cells through cytoplasmic extensions (bone canaliculi).  

2. Size and Location  
– They are tiny – 15–30 micrometers in diameter (smaller than osteoblasts).  
– Encased in lacunae – small cavities within the bone, interconnected by a network of canaliculi.  
– Constitute 90–95% of all bone cells – dominating mature bone tissue.  

3. Functions: From Homeostasis to Mechanosensing  
– Bone remodeling regulation – detect mechanical stress and send signals to osteoblasts/osteoclasts.  
– Mineralization maintenance – control calcium and phosphate exchange between bone and blood.  
– Network communication – connected via syncytium (a network of extensions), functioning like a biological internet for bones.  

4. Longevity and Death  
– Live for decades (even 25+ years!), but lose activity with age.  
– Their death contributes to bone weakening (e.g., in osteoporosis).

Though microscopic, osteocytes are crucial for skeletal strength. Their network resembles not only Naarden’s fortifications but also ancient communication systems – proof that nature has long relied on proven solutions. Fun Fact: If all osteocytes in the body were lined up, they would stretch about 100 km!
