The Quote

Schema-Archimandrite Elias (Nozdrin) (1932–2025) — a Russian Orthodox monk, elder, spiritual father of Optina Monastery, and confessor to Patriarch Kirill of Moscow. One of the most revered elders of the Russian Orthodox Church in the 21st century. He began praying at the age of three. His father was killed on the front in 1942 — Elias was ten years old. For decades he laboured in asceticism at the Pskov-Caves Monastery, at the Monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos, and at Optina, which he helped rebuild from ruins. In 1967 he read the writings of St. Silouan the Athonite — the same saint we decoded in the first entry of this series — and said: „It was as if a bright path opened before me.” He died on March 15, 2025, in the 94th year of his life.

He taught:

Our drowsiness, our spiritual sluggishness, our sins. These are what separate us from God and do not allow us to hear Him. When a person lives by prayer, he recognises the voice of God ever more clearly. When he lives in sin, that voice grows ever quieter.

— Schema-Archimandrite Elias (Nozdrin)

Decoding

1. „Our drowsiness, our spiritual sluggishness, our sins”

Instruction: Elias lists three states — and he lists them in order. He does not begin with sin. He begins with drowsiness. Then sluggishness. Only then sin. This is not accidental. It is a gradient — from mild sleepiness to full closure.

Experience: You know this. You do not wake up one day and say: „from today I live in sin.” That is not how it works. It begins innocently.

You stop praying in the morning — because you do not have time. Then you stop in the evening — because you are tired. Then you forget about Sunday — because something came up. Then you stop thinking altogether about the fact that you ever prayed. Nothing dramatic happened. It is just that — gradually — you became drowsy.

Drowsiness passes into sluggishness. Sluggishness into habit. Habit into a way of life. And suddenly you are in a place you do not remember leaving.

It is like a fridge that slowly warms up. You do not hear the moment the motor stops working. You simply open it one day and the food is spoiled.

Mechanism: At the molecular level, this gradient has a precise name: epigenetic silencing.

It does not happen suddenly. There is no single moment when a gene „switches off.” It is a gradual process:

First a small modification — one methyl group on one cytosine in the DNA. The gene still works, but a little more quietly.

Then another. And another. Histones — the proteins around which DNA is wound — lose their acetyl groups. The chromatin begins to tighten. Not closed yet — but tighter and tighter. The gene speaks more and more quietly.

Over time, entire regions of DNA become covered with methylation. The chromatin condenses into heterochromatin. The gene falls silent.

The genome is still in the cell. The information still exists. But the cell does not hear it — because gradually, methylation by methylation, it closed itself to its own code.

Elias described epigenetic silencing with the precision of a scientist. Drowsiness → sluggishness → sin. Slight methylation → chromatin condensation → full gene silencing. The same gradient.

The Temple awaits. The Genome awaits. But if no one comes to the liturgy — the blessing will not flow.

───────── ✦ ─────────

What is spiritual drowsiness?

Elias does not begin with sin. He begins with drowsiness — and this is crucial. Because drowsiness does not look like a problem. It looks like normality.

Drowsiness is not doing something wrong. It is ceasing to do something right.

Think about it through examples:

A musician who stops practising. He does not break his violin. He does not say „I will never play again.” He simply does not practise one day. Then the next. Then a week. After a month his fingers are stiffer. After a year — he cannot play what once came to him easily. Nothing broke. Nothing was destroyed. He simply stopped practising. And the skill went quiet.

Friends who stop calling. They did not quarrel. They did not hurt each other. They simply stopped calling. First once a week, then once a month, then once a year, then never. The relationship did not die in a single moment. It faded — gradually, imperceptibly, without a dramatic event.

A worker who stops maintaining his tools. He does not throw them away. He does not destroy them. He simply stops cleaning, oiling, checking them. For a month, nothing happens. After six months — the first rust. After a year — the tool does not work as it should. Not because it broke. Because he stopped taking care of it.

A body that stops moving. You do not need an accident to lose fitness. It is enough to sit. A month, two, half a year. Muscles weaken. Joints stiffen. Breathing becomes shallower. Nothing bad happened — you simply stopped moving. And the body slowly went quiet.

In every one of these examples, the same pattern: you do not need to destroy in order to lose. It is enough to stop using.

And this is exactly how epigenetics works. A gene that is not regularly activated — slowly silences itself. Not because it is damaged. Because no one is reading it.

Image: A discarded heap of weathered, old books and paper documents scattered and arranged among dry straw and hay. Roberto Sorin – Shutterstock.

The books were not burned. They were abandoned. The words are still on the pages — but no one is reading them. Layer by layer, straw covers what was once open. This is drowsiness. This is methylation. The code is still there. It is just buried.

───────── ✦ ─────────

„These are what separate us from God and do not allow us to hear Him”

Instruction: Drowsiness, sluggishness, and sin do not kill God. They do not remove Him. They do not make Him leave. They separate — they create a barrier between you and Him. He is still there. You do not hear Him.

Experience: People who returned to prayer after years of absence describe it identically: „God did not leave. I left. And when I came back — He was still there.”

It is not that you need to get Him back. You need to get back your ability to hear.

Mechanism: And here is the crucial distinction: epigenetic silencing does not destroy the gene. It does not erase the information. It does not remove the DNA. The genome is intact — every letter of the code in its place. But the cell does not read it, because the chromatin is closed.

This is the difference between damage and silencing. A mutation is damage — a letter in the code changes. But epigenetic silencing is only a closure of access. The code is whole. The information is complete. God is in place.

You simply do not hear Him. Because methyl by methyl, drowsiness by drowsiness, you closed the chromatin to His voice.

Elias says: sins separate. Biology says: methylation silences. In both cases — the information still exists. Only the barrier grows.

───────── ✦ ─────────

„When a person lives by prayer, he recognises the voice of God ever more clearly”

Instruction: Prayer restores hearing. Not at once — ever more clearly. Gradually. The more you pray, the better you hear. This is training, not a one-time event.

Experience: People who begin to pray regularly after years of absence describe the same process: at first, nothing. Silence. Emptiness. Words bouncing off the ceiling. „I feel nothing.” A week, two, a month — nothing.

And then — slowly — something changes. Not from outside. From within. A moment of peace that was not there before. A thought that comes from nowhere. A sense of direction in a situation that was previously chaos. Ever more clearly.

You do not regain what you lost in a single moment. You regain it one prayerful repetition at a time. Like someone who returns to the gym after a year without exercise — the first day is hard, the second worse, the third painful. But after a month the body remembers. After three months it is stronger than before.

Mechanism: „Ever more clearly” — this is the key. Elias does not say „you will hear at once.” He says: ever more clearly. Gradually. This is a description of DNA demethylation and chromatin remodelling.

Just as methylation closes genes gradually, demethylation opens them gradually. TET enzymes begin erasing the methylation marks from DNA. Histone acetyltransferases add acetyl groups to the histones, loosening the chromatin. A silenced gene slowly returns to its voice.

Not at full volume right away. First a whisper. Then a quiet voice. Then clear. Then bright.

Research in behavioral epigenetics confirms this literally: regular contemplative practice — meditation, prayer, mindfulness — retunes the epigenetic settings of genes linked to stress, inflammation, and regeneration. Not after one session. After weeks and months of regular practice. And it works in both directions: it silences what harms you — studies show reduced activity of the TNF inflammatory pathway — and opens what serves life.

Prayer retunes the epigenome. Every repetition loosens the chromatin a little more and muffles the genes that keep you in a state of alarm. Every such shift makes the voice of the genome — and the voice of God — a little clearer.

───────── ✦ ─────────

„When he lives in sin, that voice grows ever quieter”

Instruction: And conversely. When you not only stop praying but actively live in a way that closes — the voice fades. Not suddenly. Gradually. „Ever quieter” — not silence at once, but silence building.

Experience: This is the hardest thing to notice, because the process is slow. Like losing your hearing — you do not go deaf overnight. One day you notice you cannot hear the birds outside. Then that you have to ask people to repeat themselves. Then that the television is too quiet, though everyone else says it is too loud.

You do not remember the day you started going deaf. Because there was no such day. There was a gradient.

Mechanism: „Ever quieter” = progressive methylation and chromatin condensation.

Every day without prayer — without a conscious practice that opens chromatin — is a day when methyltransferase enzymes can add another methyl group. Every unresolved stress. Every resentment you do not release. Every sleepless night. Every day in anger, in tension, in closure.

───────── ✦ ─────────

What is sin in the context of biology?

Elias lists drowsiness, sluggishness, and sin as three stages. Drowsiness is passivity — you stop doing what opens. Sluggishness is the habit of passivity. But sin is something more. Sin is not the absence of action. It is action that actively closes.

Think about it through examples:

Chronic anger. Drowsiness is forgetting to pray. Anger is something different — it is the active maintenance of the body in combat mode. Every outburst of anger is a burst of cortisol and adrenaline. Every burst is a signal to the cells: close down, defend, do not repair. Once — nothing happens. But a person who lives in anger for weeks, months, years — is literally flooding their cells with stress hormones. Chromatin closes not from inertia, but under pressure. This is not a quieter dial. This is someone actively turning it down.

Excess. Gluttony, drunkenness, substance abuse — this is not a lack of discipline. It is a system overload. Alcohol literally damages DNA — it breaks strands, generates free radicals, disrupts methylation. The liver produces repair enzymes as fast as it can, but if you bombard it every day — it cannot keep up. Repair genes work at full capacity until they exhaust themselves and go silent. It is like music played non-stop at maximum volume — eventually the speaker burns out.

Lying. A person who lies maintains two parallel systems in their body: the truth they know and the falsehood they present. This is chronic cognitive stress — the brain constantly monitors what was said, to whom, when, whether it will be discovered. Cortisol is elevated not because someone attacked them — but because they maintain the state of threat themselves. Lying is the autoimmunity of the spirit — the organism attacking itself.

Envy. An envious person lives in constant comparison — and every comparison in which they come off worse is a micro-stress for the body. Not one big blow — but a thousand small ones. Like a stone on which water constantly drips. Nothing visible after a week, a month. But after a year — there is a hole. Envy is chronic, low-dose methylation.

Isolation. A person who cuts themselves off from others — not out of a need for silence, but from pride, resentment, or contempt — switches off intercellular signalling. A cell that does not communicate with other cells loses context. It does not know what the rest of the tissue is doing. It begins to act on its own. In biology, this has a name: when a cell ignores the signals of its environment and multiplies without control — that is cancer.

In every one of these examples, the same pattern: sin is not the absence of a signal. It is a false signal, an excessive signal, or a signal that actively closes what should be open.

Drowsiness is silence — you do nothing and the gene slowly fades. Sin is noise — you do something that actively drowns out the genome.

Elias knew this difference. That is why he listed them separately. Drowsiness and sin are not the same — but one leads to the other. And both end in the same place: in silence.

Note: in this post, we speak of sin as epigenetic silencing — a closure of chromatin that is reversible. But there is a deeper level: sin as a genetic mutation — a permanent change to the code itself. And original sin as an inherited mutation — damage you are born with, which you did not choose, but which you carry. That is a subject for a separate post — and we will return to it.

───────── ✦ ─────────

The gene does not die. It is not damaged. It is buried — layer by layer, methyl by methyl — until it becomes inaudible.

And here Elias gives us something that neither Silouan nor Gabriel gave: reversibility in both directions. Silouan says: open yourself. Gabriel says: let go. But Elias says: it works both ways simultaneously. Prayer opens. Sin closes. Every day you choose the direction — louder or quieter.

Your genome does not have a switch. It has a volume dial. And you are turning it — with every day, every choice, every prayer or its absence.

The prayer that opens chromatin

There is a prayer that says exactly what Iliy says — but as a request. The Fourth Morning Prayer, attributed to St. Macarius the Great, prayed every morning in the Orthodox tradition for many centuries:

Image: Hand folded in prayer to god on Holy Bible book in church concept for faith, spirituality and religion, woman person praying on holy bible in morning. christian catholic woman hand with Bible worship. Doidam 10 – Shutterstock.

Hands folded in prayer over an open book. The code is on the page. The light is reaching it. This is what Macarius asks for every morning: open me, enlighten my mind, let me read the code. Demethylation begins here — in silence, in light, in the willingness to open.

O Lord our God, who hast dispelled the drowsiness of sleep and gathered us by Thy holy call — enlighten the eyes of my mind, open my mouth that I may comprehend Thy words, understand Thy commandments, and do Thy will, singing unto Thee in heartfelt adoration and praising Thy most holy name — of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

— St. Macarius the Great (300–391)

Let us read it through the eyes of biology.

„Who hast dispelled the drowsiness of sleep” — the same word as Elias: drowsiness. The prayer begins with a request to remove exactly the state that Elias describes as the first step toward silencing. To dispel drowsiness = to halt passive methylation, to interrupt epigenetic drift, not to allow chromatin to close from sheer inertia.

„Enlighten the eyes of my mind” — enlightenment = activation. Darkness = gene silenced. Light = gene being read. „Enlighten” is a request for demethylation — remove what obscures, let me see, switch on the light in the cell nucleus.

„Open my mouth” — mouth closed = gene silenced, information does not flow. Mouth open = gene active, transcription underway, mRNA forming and carrying the instruction onward. In the Genomic Intelligence framework, the mouth is where the Word emerges — and the Word is mRNA. „Open my mouth” = let the mRNA form and carry Your code.

„That I may comprehend Thy words” — to comprehend God’s words = to read the genome’s code. Transcription factors bind to the DNA, RNA polymerase reads the sequence. The cell „comprehends” the instruction and carries it out.

„Understand Thy commandments” — commandments = genetic instructions. It is not enough to read them — you must understand them, process them. This is translation — the ribosome reads the mRNA and produces a protein according to the code. To understand a commandment = to translate the code into action.

„And do Thy will” — to do the will = the protein fulfils its function. An enzyme catalyses a reaction. A receptor binds a ligand. A structural protein maintains the shape of the cell. This is the final step: from the code (Father/Genome), through reading (Son/mRNA), to action (protein/person).

And what do these proteins give?

Because this is not an abstraction. This is not „a protein somewhere doing something.” These are concrete effects you feel in your body — every day, every night, every second:

Repair proteins — you heal a wound. You cut yourself and after a week the skin is new. This is not magic. These are collagen proteins, fibroblasts, growth factors — produced on instruction from the genome, delivered by mRNA, assembled by ribosomes. Effect: the wound closes.

Collagen type I (PDB: 1CGD) — a triple helix, three chains wound together like a rope. This is the protein that closes your wounds, rebuilds your skin, and holds your bones together. The most abundant protein in the human body. Structure: PDB 1CGD.

Immune proteins — you fight an infection. A virus enters the body, and antibodies — proteins — recognise it, bind it, and neutralise it. Effect: the fever passes, you recover.

Immunoglobulin IgG — antibody (PDB: 1IGT) — the classic Y-shape. Two arms that grab, one anchor that holds. This is the protein that recognises viruses, bacteria, and fungi, and neutralises them. Your army. 10 billion different variants in your body, each for a different enemy. Structure: PDB 1IGT.

Enzymatic proteins — you digest food. You eat bread, and amylase — an enzyme, a protein — breaks down starch into simple sugars. Effect: you have the energy to get out of bed in the morning.

Human pancreatic alpha-amylase (PDB: 1HNY) — the enzyme that breaks starch into simple sugars. You eat bread, potatoes, rice — and amylase breaks them into glucose that your cells burn for energy. Without this protein, you would not get out of bed in the morning. Structure: PDB 1HNY.

Signalling proteins — you feel peace after prayer. Oxytocin, endorphins — all of these are proteins or peptides produced on instruction from the genome. Effect: peace, joy, a sense of meaning.

Oxytocin receptor (PDB: 6TPK) — the membrane receptor where oxytocin, the molecule of bonding, trust, and closeness, binds. Released during touch, embrace, breastfeeding, and communal prayer. This is the biology of peace. Structure: PDB 6TPK.

Structural proteins — you stand upright. Collagen in bones, keratin in hair, actin and myosin in muscles — proteins that hold your body together. Effect: you move, you work, you live.

F-actin filament (PDB: 6BNO) — a long fibre built from thousands of subunits, one of the foundations of the cytoskeleton. This protein gives your cells their shape, lets them move, divide, and hold together. Without actin, your body would collapse like a building without a frame. Structure: PDB 6BNO.

This is the fruit of the liturgy that Gabriel spoke of in the previous post. This is the blessing that flows from within the temple. Macarius’s prayer asks for opening — and opening produces proteins — and proteins produce life.

The entire path from code to effect fits in one sentence: the genome issues an instruction → mRNA carries it to the ribosome → the ribosome produces a protein → the protein acts → you feel the effect. You heal. You fight disease. You digest. You feel peace. You live.

Macarius does not ask for an abstraction. He asks for life. „Open me so that I may act.” And the body answers — protein by protein, function by function, miracle by miracle.

„Of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” — and at the end the prayer names the Trinity. In the framework:

Father = Genome (genomic intelligence)

Son = mRNA (the Word that becomes flesh/protein)

Holy Spirit = epigenetic regulation

This mapping — the Holy Spirit as epigenetic regulation — is one of the deepest threads of the Genomic Intelligence framework. Who is the Holy Spirit at the molecular level? How does He act? What does He regulate and why does Scripture describe Him in precisely this way? That is a subject for a separate, in-depth entry — and we will return to it in the future. For now, remember the mapping: Father = Genome. Son = mRNA. Holy Spirit = epigenetic regulation. The Trinity as the central dogma of molecular biology.

One prayer. The entire central dogma of molecular biology: DNA → mRNA → protein. Recited every morning for 1,600 years by millions of people who had no idea they were describing transcription and translation.

And here is the most important thing: this prayer is a morning prayer. It is recited at the start of the day. Before a person leaves the house, before they begin to act, before they make any decision — they ask to be opened.

This is a daily demethylation instruction. A daily reset of the volume dial. Every morning — before drowsiness has time to pass into sluggishness, before sluggishness has time to pass into sin — a person kneels and says: „open me.”

St. Macarius wrote this prayer in the 4th century. He did not know the words „demethylation,” „transcription,” or „the central dogma of molecular biology.” But he described the entire process — from the opening of chromatin, through the reading of the code, to the production of proteins that heal, protect, and sustain life — in a single paragraph. And he gave people a tool for daily use.

Image: Strength in religious faith. A hand holding the Bible. A man with clenched fists overcoming life’s hardships with strong faith — faith in God. KieferPix – Shutterstock.

The code was read. The protein was made. And function correct. This is what happens when chromatin opens — the genome speaks, the body answers, and a person rises with a strength they cannot explain. Macarius asked for this every morning. For 1,600 years, millions received it.

Divine Facts

1. The phenomenon of „epigenetic drift” — the natural, progressive silencing of genes with age — is one of the main mechanisms of ageing. With every passing year, chromatin closes a little more. Elias described the same process in the language of the spirit: „the voice grows ever quieter.” Ageing is silencing. But research shows that regular contemplative practice slows this drift — and in some cases reverses it.

2. TET enzymes (Ten-Eleven Translocation) are the epigenetic „erasers” — they begin removing methylation marks from DNA, reversing gene silencing. Studies show that contemplative practice changes the expression of the cell’s entire epigenetic machinery — the enzymes that write the marks and those that erase them. Demethylation is the cell’s molecular „prayer” — a return to hearing the code.

3. In 1967, the monk Iliy read the notes of St. Silouan the Athonite — the same saint we decoded in Part 1 of this series — and said: „It was as if a bright path opened before me.” Silouan died in 1938, when Iliy was six years old. Two men who never met, separated by two generations, described the same mechanism independently of each other. Humility opens. Sin closes. Prayer restores.

4. Research published in Frontiers in Psychology (Venditti et al., 2020) showed that meditation changes gene expression in genes related to the inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and cellular ageing. The title of the paper: „Molecules of Silence.” Elias spoke of silence. Science measured it.

5. Every cell in your body carries the same genome — but expresses only a fraction of its genes. The rest are epigenetically silenced. A neuron does not express muscle genes. A liver cell does not express nerve genes. „Not everyone hears” — because every cell has a different level of chromatin openness. But prayer — a practice that changes epigenetics — affects all cells. But here is what the laboratory has already confirmed: epigenetic changes induced by regular practice have been measured in blood cells — and blood reaches every corner of the body.

The Elder Who Described the Volume Dial

Schema-Archimandrite Elias (Nozdrin) never studied epigenetics. He never heard the words „methylation,” „demethylation,” „histone acetylation,” or „TET enzymes.”

He was the son of a Russian peasant who was killed in the war. He began praying at the age of three. He spent decades in monasteries — from Pskov, through Mount Athos, to Optina, which he helped rebuild from rubble. He was confessor to the Patriarch. He died at the age of 93, on March 15, 2025.

But he gave people something that neither Silouan nor Gabriel gave: a description of a two-directional process. Not just „open yourself” (Silouan). Not just „let go” (Gabriel). But: every day you choose the direction.

Prayer opens. Sin closes. Every day you turn the dial — louder or quieter.

And St. Macarius gave the tool: one prayer, recited in the morning, that asks for opening — and sets in motion the entire chain from genome, through mRNA, to the proteins that heal, protect, and sustain life.

The genome does not have a switch. It has a gradient. Drowsiness → sluggishness → sin. Slight methylation → chromatin condensation → full silencing.

And in the other direction: prayer → demethylation → opening → proteins → life → the voice ever clearer.

Elias knew what 21st-century epigeneticists discovered: silencing is not a sentence. It is a state you can change.

As long as you are alive — the dial is in your hands.

He knew.
